Arroyo Pescado Made the Cover Story of Fly Fisherman Magazine

We don't need to tell you how special Arroyo Pescado is. Let the guys at Fly Fisherman Magazine do it instead.

The June-July 2024 issue (Vol. 55, No. 4) ran a feature called "The Spring Creek Murder," a Wild West story set on the banks of what the magazine calls one of the best spring creeks in the world, right here on our water. It's the kind of piece that puts a place like Arroyo Pescado in front of the entire US fly fishing market in one shot.

A Wild West story hiding in the grass

In 1909, a man named Llwyd Ap Iwan ran the general store at the old estancia near Arroyo Pescado. He was shot and killed there, and the crime was blamed on two American outlaws working the area at the time: Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh, better known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The two had bought a ranch nearby a few years earlier and were well known in the valley long before Hollywood ever got hold of their names. A headstone still marks the place where Ap Iwan died, inscribed in English, Spanish, and Welsh, standing behind a small white fence a short walk from the water.

Whether Cassidy and Sundance actually pulled the trigger is still debated. Most historians today lean toward a different pair of American outlaws. But the story has stuck to this stretch of river for over a century, and it's part of what makes fishing here feel like more than casting a line. You're wading through frontier history that nobody's fully solved.

The water earns the hype on its own

Strip away the outlaw story and Arroyo Pescado still stands on its own. It's a true spring creek: gin clear, technical, full of big rainbows and browns that see enough pressure to make you work for every take. The kind of water where a six-inch miss on your cast is the difference between a follow and a refusal.

It's one of two spring creeks (along with the Gualjaina) that feed the Río Gualjaina, a system running through private estancias across the Patagonian Steppe, largely untouched and rarely fished hard. That's the same water we built the Founders Season around.

Why this matters for you
