Patagonian Estancias for Non-Anglers: Hiking, Riding and Birdwatching

October 7, 2026 · 5 min read

Many of our guests never pick up a fly rod. For them, an estancia is a place to ride, walk, watch the land come alive and slow down, and our leisure programs are designed exactly for that.

Horseback riding

Riding is the most natural way to cross an estancia. At Arroyo Pescado, guests ride across open valleys and along the river with a gaucho. Around River House, rides head into open country and the hills, with views of Volcán Lanín. Horseback riding is included in our leisure programs at both lodges.

Hiking and trekking

Trekking around the estancia is part of every stay. Longer guided hikes reach the national parks of the region: Los Alerces near Esquel, and Lanín around San Martín de los Andes, where national park entrance is included in the River House leisure program.

Wildlife and birdwatching

At Arroyo Pescado, outings can focus on birds, photography, native flora or the broader ecology of the estancia, looking for condors and the wildlife that moves through the steppe, valleys and waterways. In the Foyel Valley, Southland companions can watch red deer, foxes and Andean condors, and forest birds such as Magellanic woodpeckers and austral parakeets.

After dark

Far from any city lights, the night sky is part of the landscape. Stargazing is one of the experiences at Arroyo Pescado, which opens in February 2027 with a special program for the annular solar eclipse.

One activity a day, or none at all

Our leisure programs include horseback riding and one guided activity per person, per day: hiking in the national park, mountain biking, kayaking, yoga, tango lessons, a winery visit or a personal shopping experience in town, and golf at Chapelco from River House. Some guests do something every day; others spend an afternoon by the fire with a book. Both are the point.

Travelling with anglers

Mixed groups work well: anglers spend the day on the water while their companions ride, hike or explore, and everyone meets again at the table in the evening. See our programs for leisure and combined itineraries.
